Hans-Dietrich Genscher, the German foreign minister, endorsed a European Union resolution supporting Rushdie as “a signal to assure the preservation of civilization and human values.” The U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution that declared its commitment “to protect the right of any person to write, publish, sell, buy, and read books without fear of intimidation and violence” and condemned Khomeini's threat as “state-sponsored terrorism.” Such governmental responses are inconceivable in 2010. उस समय फ्रांस के समाजवादी राष्ट्रपति फ्रांकोस मिटरलैण्ड ने रश्दी के विरुद्ध खतरे को पूरी तरह बुराई कहा था। जर्मनी की ग्रीन पार्टी ने ईरान के साथ सभी आर्थिक सम्बन्ध तोड लेने की बात की थी। जर्मनी के विदेश मंत्री हांस डेत्रिच जेंचर ने यूरोपीयन यूनियन प्रस्ताव के द्वारा रश्दी का समर्थन करने की बात की। अमेरिकी सीनेट ने किसी भी व्यक्ति के पुस्तक लिखने, प्रकाशित करने पढने और बिना भय के यह सब करने के अधिकार की रक्षा का प्रस्ताव पारित किया और खोमेनी की धमकी को राज्य प्रायोजित आतंक बताया। 2010 में सरकारों की ओर से ऐसी प्रतिक्रिया नहीं आती।
